Why Can't I Buy a Soda with My Hotel Room Key?
Well? Why do I have to go down 23 floors to change a $20 bill so I can get a drink? I have a hotel card tied to a credit card. Why don't the Coke folks and the Hotel folks get together and let me spend my hard earned credit on an overpriced can?

You can - or at least I've been to a hotel in (I think) London that allowed me to do exactly that. Stick the room card into the machine, choose what you want, it shows up on the bill.
Here in Singapore we have some soda machines where you simply send a text message (SMS) on your cell phone to a number listed on the vending machine, and out pops a soda. Neat eh? That's why I give my kids pre-paid cell phone cards so they won't bankrupt me by SMS'ing sodas for their whole class...
