Why Didn't She Give Away the Cats?

Ellen Degenerate is in trouble for giving a way a dog she got from a rescue group. Apparently the dog didn't get along with her cats. She subsequently gave the dog to her hairdresser. The rescue group called to check on the dog and removed the dog from the hairdresser when they found out that she had given it away.

We got our emergency backup dog, Skippy, through a similar organization. They were VERY CLEAR that they retained the right to follow up on the dog and remove the dog if we violated the agreement. Despite being as dumb as a cat, Skippy is a good dog and isn't going anywhere.

My question is, why didn't Ellen do the right thing and get rid of the cats? ...oh, and thank God she didn't adopt children!
