Microsoft announced yesterday that they were buying Winternals for an undisclosed sum. In the process they get the Winternals founders, a couple of really bright guys named Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell. Russinovich is the guy who found Sony's root kit last year. They've already got a suite of software with some really cool, low level functionality, for serious administrators, mere mortals will have no idea what some of this stuff is. Much of the functionality developed by Winternals will be rolled into Windows Vista and other apps over time.
It seems that MS is back in the war for talent. After a losing a number of high profile defections, Ray Ozzie is now the heir at Microsoft and they look like they are adding some other high profile talent like Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell.
